We are Safe, Strong and Free!

Today we had CAPP! CAPP stands for child assault prevention program  In this program, the ladies teach you what some tricks a stranger might try and what you you should do if they do it to you.
They also teach us what a good secret is and a bad secret is.  They also did some role plays….but the most important thing is they want us to feel is: SAFE, STRONG AND FREE.

Mason-Rice Cafeteria Now Open!

One Week ago the Mason-Rice cafeteria [ the Centre] opened. At lunch we come into the cafeteria. If you order lunch you get your card and come in to buy your lunch. If you brought your lunch you take your lunch box to your table. There are 13 tables. Each class gets one or two tables. For example, Ms. Ramgren’s class gets tables 5 and 7. Second grade gets 15 minutes to eat. It also serves as our auditorium. Because of that a popular name was the Cafetorium. But the actual name is the Centre.

Lunch Time!

Last week we ate in the new cafeteria!  This is great news for us because we don’t have to walk as far with our food.  We have assigned tables, but not assigned seats- HOORAY!!!!!  I like this idea because we can either talk with friends or sit with people we don’t usually sit with.  We’re not only throwing food out,we’re also recycling!  Since there are multiple classes in the lunchroom, it can get pretty noisy. Do you like it as much as I do????

What is Your Funny Family Story?

Funny stories

Four days ago Nate’s grandpa came in and told funny stories. He told how Nate's great grandfather had fallen asleep at work
and robbers came and took his the bed with him on it.  After they kidnapped him, he woke up in the middle of the forest. It was very cold and he realized that robbers stole money from him.
Do you have a funny story?

Special Visitor - Chinese Ribbon Dancing by Sarah

Chinese Ribbon Dancing

I think Chinese Ribbon Dancing is a great way to express my feelings. That is what we did in Ms. Ramgren’s class today. There was a Chinese teacher and I really liked her. She had wonderfully colored ribbons for the class. They were long, beautiful strands of silk on a stick. You needed a lot of space though, because they were big and they took up a lot of room. You could basically draw pictures in the air with the ribbons. The music was usually Chinese classical. I had tons of fun and it was great exercise.

Funny Family Story by Van

Hello everyone Nate’s grandparents gave us homework to come up with a funny family story. Here is mine!

My great uncle Chris made mini airplanes when he was a kid. One day he and his friends went out to try one out.  He went, “Vroom vrrroooom vrrroom!”  It took forever for it to start. Once it started,  it went out of control at the airplane tower. They said, “Holy cow!  A tiny airplane.”  Chris called people to see if any one found his plane. Once he called one of the airplane people.  They said it went north, so he went north and found his plane. That was my funny family story THE END!

Learning About China by Sam C.

We have been learning about China.  China  is  over  5000  years  old. China  is  split  into  two  parts: urban and rural.   Urban  is   the  city  life  and  rural  is  the  farm  life.  China  has a population of over 1 billion people.  China has the most people in the world.  The capital of China is Beijing.  Beijing has the Forbidden City.  Long ago only Emperors could live there and no ordinary people could come in.  The biggest town square is in Beijing.  China also has the Yellow River.  It is one of the biggest rivers in the world.  Part of Mr. Everest goes into Chinese territory.  The money used in China is the Yuan.  The main language in China is Mandarin.  Some chinese people can use an abacus as fast as you can type a calculator.  China is famous for many things.  One of those things is silk.  The Chinese invented many things.  One of those things was tea.  An English spy went to China and stole their tea.   That is how Chinese tea came to England and India.  It spread from there.  Some people think that China looks like a chicken.  I have been to China.  I went to a big city called Hong Kong.  Hong Kong is one of the miniature capitals.
FUNNY,FUN!

Nate’s grandparents came in to read a book that they wrote and illustrated together.
Nate has a whole binder full of poems and stories  his grandparents made together.
Nate played the beginning of happy birthday on his grandfather’s “head trumpet”
by simply blowing on his bald head!
Nate’s grandfather told a  funny story from his family about sleeping!
The whole class laughed.

Science Week Visit with Mr. Heff

For science week, Sydney’s dad, Mr. Heff, came and showed us how to use a pendulum in physics. The pendulum was a metal washer attached to a string. We used them to tell the gravity’s pull. Gravity’s pull pulled the washer down, but the string kept it from falling farther.  It had nowhere to go, but it still had energy, so that’s why it swung back and forth.  Pendulums are also used for telling time. We each worked with a partner and a pendulum.  We noticed that the pendulum swung at a constant rate. It didn’t matter how heavy the washer was, but it did matter how long the string was. In the pendulum experiment, we had to know the length of the string and how many times it swung back and forth in 30 seconds.  For example, a string 43cm long did 24 swings in 1.25 seconds.  Finally, Mr. Heff made a graph that showed our results.

Oreo Moon Phases

We are learning about the moon. and we did a project to show the moon phases.  We took out Oreos and did a  moon phases project! At school we got out Oreos and glued them on a paper plate with frosting! Yummy! We did it to learn more about the moon phases and the direction of the moon as it orbits the earth. It happened at school in the afternoon and we did a great job! The class did it together. It was really fun! We even got to eat 2-3 Oreos they were sooo good and yummy! We learned that the moon went in a counter clockwise rotation. And it starts out as a new moon then a waxing crescent  then is the first quarter then the waxing gibbous then a full moon after it starts waning. Then it’s a waning gibbous after it’s the last quarter then the waning then it’s the waning crescent.  It takes about month for the moon to orbit the earth and since there is no atmosphere to protect the moon like Earth, in the day it can reach up to about 100 degrees and at night it will drop down very very very low.

We will admit it that it was a little messy but also great fun. After the thrilling moments we licked the frosting from our fingers and ate Oreos while we cleaned up. The girls and boys bathroom was just as buzzing and busy as a beehive with everyone was busy washing up hands and using the bathroom.  Our classroom sink was just as busy as a bunch of ants
in the middle of summer.  As we cleaned up, lots of smiling faces were glimmering about everywhere and shining in the dark of Room 15 with lights off . The sight was magnificent
and  gorgeous.  It was so magnificent that we cleaned slowly. The beautiful smiling faces
were still there and the room slowly, slowly, slowly vanished out into the world as our
classroom slowly got clean again.
